“Self-reflection is a school of wisdom” Baltasar Gracian.

A little intro about how I got here

After graduated from the university last December, I’ve been super excited to get started on my marketing career. I managed to grant a Graduate Visa to stay in Australia for 2 more years, hoping to build my career and settle here.

However, I found out that in order to 1.)pursue my career in the field that I love and 2.)get the right to stay here permanently, I have to go work in a low-population area.

There are so many reasons why international students would like to get the citizenship here in Australia. It is a huge boost in life personally and professionally.

For a starter, most of the jobs are looking for ‘someone with the right to work and live in Australia permanently’.

If one grants the right to do so, it’ll open many more doors to opportunities.

So I decided.

To take the hard choice.

And here I am, a month and a half after moving to Hobart, Tasmania, searching and turning the city upside-down to find that marketing job.

So it’s time to review what happened, reflect what I have learnt and decide what to do from now.

Here is what I’ve learned…

1. Self-discipline

In order to achieve the goal, you have to set your mind to it, work on it everyday to get closer to it. It’s very important to always remember why you started the journey in the first place.

In life, we all lost track of our journey sometimes. This includes being distracted by other unimportant things, having a thought of giving up or even waking up late.

Waking up early is a great example of self-discipline.

The earlier you get off the bed, the more time you will have to make the most of your day.

Let’s be honest, most of us won’t do anything productive after 3pm anyway so why don’t we just prolong the time in the morning.

There is much more research suggesting benefits of waking up early. It can help you sleep better, reduce stress and it is also correlated to wellbeing.

Planning what to do on the next day will excite us the get out of the bed in the morning, knowing a clear path that we are heading today.

2. Gratitude

During the difficult time to life, it is very important to keep hold of and appreciate what we have in life.

Whenever I was let down by my situation, I tried to be thankful of what I have.

I find little things in life that I get the privilege to have. This might be a family, a place to live, supportive friends or the food that I can afford to eat.

I acknowledge other people about it whenever they do something for me. Not only this will benefit my view of life, it will also make other people happy and feel appreciated.

3. Student-mindset

There is so much you can learn from this world that a thousand life time would not be enough.

Get yourself excited everyday about what are the new thing that you’re learning today.

Lucky for us, you can look up anything you want to learn nowadays, for free. So why don’t we make use of it?

It can be reading a book, taking an online course or even listening to a podcast.

It is even better if you can find a mentor so you have someone to look up to and someone you can guide you into the right direction.

4. Mindfulness

This might involves meditation but the main point here is that we’re aware of what we can control in life.

Whenever I’m stressed out about something, I think about why I am and what I can do about it.

If there is anything I can do about it, then I will do it. I will be proactive and take control of life instead of letting it push me around.

If there’s nothing I can do, then there is no point stressing about it anyway.

It’s okay to think about the future, reflect on the past but the priority should still be making the most of the present.

5. Self-reflection

When you spend some time with yourself, you’ll start to figure out what you really want from life, what path you really want to take and what really matters the most for you.

When you look back to the past, it also gives you an opportunity to reflect on it and grow. You’ll see how much you have changed and how everything has led you here.

I grew a lot since I arrived in Hobart. I get up early, eat clean, read more, learn more, make a progress on my career and be more productive. This is all due to the time that I have to reflect on myself since I arrived.

Remember that…

There’s always room for personal development.

If you read this article till the end, I really appreciate your time and hope that it will inspire you in some way.

I still do not know how the journey will end but I surely have learned a lot from it.
