I recently attended a ‘Team Building’ workshop, did a few exercises with other team members that I had just met to compete with the other teams in the class, and luckily, we were able to get victories a few times.

Here are some of the lessons that I’ve reflected on from the success of our team.

1. Everyone needs to know their roles, responsibilities and KPI to keep them accountable

After everyone is clear on the set goal that we have to achieve, it’s essential to break it down and assign them to the individuals. Doing so will give them the ownership, autonomy and, hopefully, the drive the do their best to contribute to the team.

When everyone is clear on the common goal and their role, the team will operate more effectively and efficiently.

2. Everyone needs to be aligned and clear on the common goal

There were times when we had to sacrifice our individual resources for our team members to perform better. Everyone will have no problem with that as long as they have a good understanding of the bigger picture, the team goal, rather than trying to achieve their individual KPI. As a result, the team that all the members are aligned and clear on the common goal performed best.

3. Celebrate and back each other up

Regardless of the result, the team should always back each other up to foster a positive working environment and relationships, so we are ready for whatever else that may come.

Do you agree? What are other things that a leader should know to help their team perform?
