3 Realisations I Got from Selling My Old iPad to a 4-Year-Old Girl

Just kidding, I sold it to her father, but it was for her. And I knew I made the right decision when I saw the spark in her eyes, and the smile on that face.

I had my iPad for 6 years and it had been a very good tool for me. I used it to take notes, watch videos, play games, edit photos and videos and etc. We had a very good memory.

Until it was unable to upgrade to the new software, which includes the ‘Night Shift’ mode where it makes your screen goes softer and orange instead of blue. I know this feature will be really good for me and will encourage me to read more.

So I figured it is time to upgrade.

I bought a new iPad, and then I had 2 iPads which is really unnecessary.

At first, I didn’t want to sell my old one because it wouldn’t be worth it if I sell it at a cheap price. Also, who would want an old iPad that can’t be updated anymore?

I put it up on Facebook Marketplace for approximately 1/3 of its original price at the time when it came out, and this is a 6-year-old iPad. I figured I should only sell it if someone is willing to pay for that price.

Surprisingly, in less than a day, I got a message from two potential buyers, both of them desperately needed an iPad for their kid. I was amazed.

For some people, it can be difficult to let go of their possession. It is scary to think about things that you have to let go without ever getting it back, especially when you have a good memory associated with it.

Nevertheless, it wasn’t going to be used sitting in the drawer next to my bed, so I decided to sell it.

The buyer turned up with his daughter. Even for a split second, I can see how excited she was and how happy they were when I handed them the 6-year-old iPad.

And here are my 3 realisations after that moment.

1. We’re already living in the futuristic world

At the time of writing this, we’re in a global pandemic coronavirus outbreak, when schools were shut and all the kids have to study from home.

This is probably why the digital devices are in demand. People need it for their kids to be able to get educated at home, and also some entertainment.

All the kids who are now studying at home are probably doing so with technology like iPad. They will be able to learn ANYTHING online, simply by just going to YouTube or Google.

Unfortunately, those kids whom parents can’t afford to get them a technology to help with their education will miss a HUGE opportunity to learn. Especially now during the global crisis where all the libraries are closed.

On the other hand, those kids, whose parents can afford, will grow up with this technology. And within a decade or two, they are going to become an employee or potential employer.

These kids are already familiar with these digital devices, some will spend all day playing with it. They can learn anything through the device and they have all the time in the world to play with it, given that they are not really working to pay the bills.

So imagine what they will be capable of when they grow up?

Can you see now that the future of the digital age is inevitable?

If you don’t adapt to the futuristic world, you will not be able to compete with those who do.

2. In order to move forward, you need to let go.

I am really stubborn when it comes to buying new stuff. I don’t buy new stuff to show off and I prefer to use what I have until it can’t be used anymore.

My previous iPad was working okay, it never had any problem other than not being able to update to the new version. So I didn’t want to spend money buying a new one just yet, as we all know how expensive Apple products can be.

However, the thought kept coming back to me. My gut kept saying ‘you can afford it’, ‘you need it’ & ‘it is going to benefit you’.

So I decided to trust my gut. I went straight to the store and bought it without any further question from the salesman, having done my research beforehand.

And I’ve never regretted it.

This new iPad has the new NightShift mode that I needed, which allows me to read more. It is faster which helps me work more efficiently and saves me more time.

And it has new features and makes my life much easier. And I’m just telling the truth, not advertising it.

It doesn’t have to be an Apple iPad but if you got stuck with an old device, where it is getting really slow and really frustrating, then you should move on.

3. You can afford it

Whilst getting the new iPad, I was also reading the book ‘The Science of Getting Rich’ and one of the ideas from the book that struck me really well is that…

‘Believe that you can afford the thing you want, visualise the thing you want and you will get it’.

Since buying my new iPad, it hurt my monthly spending budget but it also drove me to find a way to get more money. And I did earn some extra cash.

Now I’m not saying that buying new stuff will directly give you more money. But when your brain knows that you need more money in the bank, it will find its way.

After buying the new iPad, I knew I didn’t have much budget for my monthly spending left, so I have to find a way to earn more, and my brain found me a way.

I made a few phone calls to cancel a membership that no longer benefits me and managed to get a refund. I rang and negotiated my monthly bills which I was able to eat a cheaper rate. I reached out to my friend and manage to get an extra job that will be able to give me more income.

Also, with the money that I got from selling my old iPad, I ended up with more money than I expected.

All of this happened within 2 days but I certainly have learnt a lot from it.

So if you have an old device that you’re not using, sell it to those who need it.
